Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

When a deadly virus known as Medousa sweeps across the globe, turning people to stone with no chance of recovery, humanity finds itself on the verge of destruction. The only hope is the Venus Gate Corporation's shocking new plan: to put 160 people in cold sleep for up to one hundred years, or until a treatment is developed. Kasumi Ishiki is one of the fortunate to be selected, and though she fears being separated from her twin sister, Shizuku, the girls hope that they can be reunited in the future. When Kasumi awakens, however, the world is not what she expected. The cold sleep facility is covered in thorns, and strange monsters start attacking them. Although most of those who have woken up die in the immediate confusion, Kasumi and a small group of survivors begin to investigate the maze-like facility and unravel the secrets of Medousa, as well as the true intentions of the Venus Gate Corporation.

Audience Consensus

Audience reception for Ibara no Ou is deeply divided, with strong opinions on both its potential and its execution. While many praise the atmospheric visuals, intriguing premise, and compelling soundtrack, a significant portion criticizes the convoluted plot, jarring CGI, and ultimately unsatisfying conclusion, especially when compared to the manga.

Strengths

  • Atmospheric and visually impressive scenery, with a good blend of 2D and 3D animation.
  • The soundtrack is atmospheric and effectively builds tension, enhancing the horror and thriller influences.
  • The initial mystery and intrigue of the plot are well-executed and engaging.
  • Some reviewers appreciated the psychological depth and philosophical undertones, particularly the "Sleeping Beauty" parallels.

Weaknesses

  • The plot becomes convoluted and confusing, especially in the latter half, with too many twists and unresolved plot points.
  • The heavy reliance on jarring and poorly integrated 3D CGI animation, particularly for monsters and characters, detracts significantly from the visual experience.
  • Many critics felt the story's potential was squandered due to poor pacing, rushed development, and a disappointing, unsatisfying ending.
  • Significant deviations from the source manga, including character backstories and the antagonist, were a major point of contention for fans of the original work.
