Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Her name is Mary Saotome—she is brazen, insolent, and defiant, yet highly intelligent. Upon transferring to Hyakkaou Private Academy, where a student's worth is determined by their wits through gambling, she seizes a glorious win against a classmate and immediately captures the attention of the devious student council members. With the bottom of Hyakkaou's rigorous hierarchy determined by least gambling winnings, the future for Tsuzura Hanatemari looks grim. As Tsuzura's childhood friend, Mary resolves to rise through the ranks and secure enough money to free Tsuzura from the shackles of the unjust system. Mary's perseverance and refusal to lose drive her to surpass and humiliate even the strongest opponents, but certain student council members seem to have greater plans for her.

Audience Consensus

Audience reception for Kakegurui Twin is largely positive, with many appreciating it as a strong standalone prequel that deepens the character of Mary Saotome. While some critics miss the intense psychological stakes of the original series and find certain plot points and side characters lacking, the animation, music, and cleverly designed gambles are frequently praised. Overall, it's seen as a solid, enjoyable entry that refines the Kakegurui formula for many viewers.

Strengths

  • Strong character development for Mary Saotome, making her more dynamic and likable than in the main series.
  • Visually appealing animation and art style, with MAPPA's trademark flair, including excellent opening and ending animations.
  • Enjoyable music and soundtrack that complements the show's themes.
  • Engaging and clever gambling games that feel more like solvable puzzles than outlandish death games.
  • A more cohesive and character-driven story compared to the episodic nature of the main series.
  • The spin-off is accessible and enjoyable even for those who haven't watched the original Kakegurui series.

Weaknesses

  • Some viewers felt the gambling games lacked the psychological terror and high stakes of the main series.
  • The ending felt rushed and required significant brainpower to understand.
  • Certain characters, particularly side characters, are described as one-dimensional or filler.
  • The show is criticized for potentially being 'yuribait' fanservice with exaggerated facial expressions.
  • Some found the plot formula repetitive (explain game, Mary seems tricked, Mary wins).
  • The 'coupling game' gamble was found uncomfortable and its stakes lacked credibility.
