Audience Consensus
Audience reception is mixed, with disappointment stemming from the 2001 remake compared to the 1992 OVA. While some appreciate the expanded story and exploration of characters' capabilities, the stiff animation, toned-down character designs, and nonsensical plot were major drawbacks. One review highlights the show's flaws as so profound that they border on genius, while the other admits to enjoying the expanded scope despite the technical shortcomings.
Strengths
- More open and wider extent of the franchise, showing more of what both good and bad guys are capable of.
- Expanded story compared to the original OVA.
Weaknesses
- Stiff and static animation compared to the 90s OVA.
- Kid-friendly designs that tone down mature or vicious elements.
- Plot is nonsensical and relies on Deus ex Machina.
- Fights are boring due to lack of movement and unclear attack distinctions.
