Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

After recovering from an accident, shy and small 15-year-old Hiyori Nishiyama is finally able to attend school again after a year. While trying to introduce herself in front of her class, she is interrupted by the tall and outgoing Yuushin Hirose. To make matters worse, their stark difference in height and personality starts to attract unwanted attention to Hiyori. Despite her unpleasant first impression of Yuushin, Hiyori becomes curious about his radiance. As the two set aside their differences, they quickly grow closer, encouraging Hiyori to break out of her shell.

Audience Consensus

The audience overwhelmingly agrees that Hiyokoi is a charming and cute OVA, particularly for fans of the shojo genre. The main point of contention is its extreme brevity, with nearly every reviewer expressing a desire for a full series adaptation. While praised for its art and character dynamics, its short length prevents it from being a truly standout experience.

Strengths

  • Cute and enjoyable watch, especially for fans of the shojo genre.
  • Charming character designs and generally good animation quality.
  • Well-developed main characters for the short runtime.
  • Captivating story with tender moments that evoke shyness and warmth.

Weaknesses

  • Significantly too short; leaves viewers wanting more and feels rushed.
  • Generic storyline that's been seen in similar, more fleshed-out series.
  • Hiyori's timidness can be perceived as annoying or a flat personality trait.
  • Other characters, besides the main duo, are not very relevant.
  • Animation, while nice, is not groundbreaking.
