The Ocean Waves
Synopsis — from MyAnimeList
In the city of Kouchi, high school student Taku Morisaki is going about his work when his friend Yutaka Matsuno calls and asks him to get to their school as soon as possible. Taku arrives, and Matsuno introduces him to Rikako Muto, a beautiful girl from Tokyo who recently transferred to their school. Although Rikako is academically and athletically gifted, her generally unpleasant attitude leaves her with virtually no friends outside of Matsuno and another girl from her class. After a chance encounter during their class trip, Taku suddenly finds himself more involved in Rikako's personal life, much to Matsuno's dismay. Struggling to balance his friendship with Matsuno and his own budding infatuation for Rikako, Taku must come to terms with his feelings and understand how a girl with a troubled past is having such a massive effect on his life.
Audience Consensus
Audience opinions on Umi ga Kikoeru are significantly divided, largely due to the polarizing nature of its protagonist and the perceived lack of narrative payoff. While some appreciate its realistic and subtle portrayal of adolescent relationships and Ghibli's signature animation, others find the story uneventful and the main female character frustratingly unlikable, leading to a disappointing viewing experience.
Strengths
- Realistic portrayal of teenage emotions and relationships
- High-quality animation and art style typical of Studio Ghibli
- Calm and fitting soundtrack that enhances the mood
- Naturalistic depiction of growing up and navigating complex feelings
- Characters, particularly Rikako, are complex and realistically depicted (for some)
Weaknesses
- Lack of significant plot progression or satisfying climax
- Female lead (Rikako) is often perceived as unlikable, selfish, and manipulative
- The romance between the leads is underdeveloped and lacks chemistry
- The protagonist (Taku) is seen as passive or a 'doormat'
- The film's short length leaves character development feeling rushed or incomplete, especially for supporting characters like Yutaka
