Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

The operation to find a missing person goes awry when Kakashi Hatake falls victim to a suspicious trap and gets separated from his students Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. To make matters worse, the trio is ambushed by mysterious ninjas who capture Sakura, prompting Naruto and Sasuke to give chase. As the two boys engage in a dangerous battle, not even Sasuke's troubling discovery about the mission can deter them from their endeavor to reunite the team and accomplish their task.

Audience Consensus

Audience reaction to Naruto: The Cross Roads is split, with many appreciating the faster pace and the rare sight of Naruto and Sasuke cooperating. However, the special is heavily criticized for its generic and redundant plot, as well as its divisive art style which, while technically impressive, detracts from the traditional anime feel for many viewers.

Strengths

  • Fast-paced and engaging for an OVA
  • Enjoyable to see Sasuke and Naruto working together
  • Technically impressive animation for its time, resembling the Ultimate Ninja Storm games

Weaknesses

  • Story is generic and lacks depth due to short runtime
  • Plot feels redundant and spoils elements of the main series
  • 3D-ish/video game animation style can be distracting and artificial in an anime format
  • Facial expressions and character movements can appear unnatural
