Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Yani is a catgirl with a seriously bad smoking habit. She smokes so much that her apartment smells like ash and is littered with cigarette butts—and plenty of other trash! Every time she tries to quit, she becomes weak to the cravings and gives in almost instantly. Will she ever get her life together, or is she doomed to live as a chainsmoking slob forever?

Audience Consensus

Audience opinion is sharply divided, with strong detractors citing its offensive and repetitive humor, while advocates praise its raw and honest portrayal of addiction and societal issues. Many agree that while the show's crude nature is off-putting, its deeper themes and unique artistic choices resonate with a specific audience.

Strengths

  • Masterful portrayal of crippling addiction and its grim reality
  • High-budget production value with brilliant animation and a phenomenal opening sequence
  • Unique and effective use of catgirl aesthetics to distance viewers from difficult subject matter, allowing it to land without suffocating them
  • Surprising tenderness and social commentary beneath a gross-out exterior
  • Humanizes characters and seeks glimpses of beauty and camaraderie amidst their struggles
  • Thought-provoking social commentary on marginalized groups and societal discrimination
  • Realistic depiction of the day-to-day lives of those struggling with addiction

Weaknesses

  • Repugnant, vile, grotesque, and mean-spirited humor that is not for everyone
  • Repetitive and stale jokes, especially concerning scatological humor and addiction
  • Lack of overarching plot and character development, leading to boredom and skipped episodes
  • Stereotypical and static characters who become tiresome
  • Poorly executed ecchi elements
  • Can be too much or not enough for Western audiences due to its specific Japanese humor
  • Unrealistic situations used to add to the humor factor
  • Fails to effectively land its comedic or dramatic points due to repetitive and simple writing
