Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4
Synopsis — from MyAnimeList
In the deadly battle at the Watergate City of Priestella, Subaru and his allies barely emerged victorious—but their triumph came at a great cost. Through the "Authority of Gluttony," Rem was put into suspended animation, while Crusch's memories and even Julius’s name were devoured. As he searches for a way to save them, Subaru learns of the "Sage" Shaula—an all-seeing being said to possess every form of knowledge. His next destination is the Pleiades Watchtower, home to the Sage, the farthest tower standing in the vast, uncharted desert known as the Auguria Dunes—a place so perilous that even the mightiest "Sword Saint," Reinhard, failed to conquer it. The fury of nature, unknown magical beasts, and unimaginable dangers lie ahead. Together with his friends, Subaru embarks on a life-risking journey to reclaim what was lost.
Audience Consensus
Audience opinion is sharply divided, with many viewers feeling the series has become repetitive, over-reliant on its core gimmick, and has lost the narrative focus that made earlier seasons compelling. Conversely, a significant portion of the audience still finds the series to be a masterful example of the isekai genre, praising its emotional depth, character development, and production values, particularly in the latest season.
Strengths
- Animation quality is a solid 8/10, but it can't carry the series for me.
- Animation is beautiful, direction grabs all your attention.
- OST and background music genuinely elevate so many moments.
- The direction was perfect here, as the confined space, the sound design and fast pacing made this scene feel as if some evil force was suffocating them.
- The voice acting is great
- The production is good
- The staff has really put their all into making sure they deliver this story the best it could possibly be.
Weaknesses
- The show is just plain bad; the main character is always screaming, and the plot feels spotty.
- Compression issues from translating the light novel into a few anime episodes, and it is quite noticeable.
- None of the characters tie the viewer to the show anymore; they all fall flat with barely any redeeming qualities.
- It has become repetitive. Certain plotlines and emotional beats feel recycled, just with different characters attached to them.
- The narrative structure of Season 4 remains trapped in the same exhausting, manipulative loop that has plagued the series from day one.
- The central gimmick, the Return by Death ability, completely destroys any actual stakes.
- Calling it the "greatest isekai" and acting like its a high bar to clear really doesnt add much to the conversation considering it is no better than the isekais it claims to be "better than".
- The character designs themselves are not just aesthetically bad, they feel actively predatory.
- Subaru's unlikable character at the start was a tough watch, in a good way, and felt like a genuine look at some relatively relatable character flaws.
- His development hits a wall in season 3.
- The main heroine, Emilia, is pretty bland.
- The anime dialogues feels really cringe but the BIGGEST problem the MC, he just depends on every one else and other characters give all of their achievements credit to him
- The story constantly tries to have its cake and eat it too.
