Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Synopsis — from MyAnimeList
A millennium has passed since the catastrophic nuclear war named the "Seven Days of Fire," which destroyed nearly all life on Earth. Humanity now lives in a constant struggle against the treacherous jungle that has evolved in response to the destruction caused by mankind. Filled with poisonous spores and enormous insects, the jungle spreads rapidly across the Earth and threatens to swallow the remnants of the human race. Away from the jungle exists a peaceful farming kingdom known as the "Valley of the Wind," whose placement by the sea frees it from the spread of the jungle's deadly toxins. The Valley's charismatic young princess, Nausicaä, finds her tranquil kingdom disturbed when an airship from the kingdom of Tolmekia crashes violently in the Valley. After Nausicaä and the citizens of the Valley find a sinister pulsating object in the wreckage, the Valley is suddenly invaded by the Tolmekian military, who intend to revive a dangerous weapon from the Seven Days of Fire. Now Nausicaä must fight to stop the Tolmekians from plunging the Earth into a cataclysm which humanity could never survive, while also protecting the Valley from the encroaching forces of the toxic jungle.
Audience Consensus
Audience reception for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is largely positive, with widespread acclaim for its stunning visuals, thematic depth, and pioneering environmental message. However, a portion of viewers find the pacing slow and some characterizations to be archetypal, leading to mild disagreement on its overall narrative execution despite its artistic merits.
Strengths
- Stunning and imaginative world-building, particularly the depiction of the toxic jungle and giant insects.
- Profound and nuanced environmentalist and pacifist themes that were ahead of their time.
- Exceptional art and animation quality, especially considering its 1984 production date, with beautiful backgrounds and creature designs.
- Joe Hisaishi's iconic and evocative musical score perfectly complements the film's atmosphere and emotional beats.
- Nausicaä is a strong, empathetic, and well-developed protagonist who serves as an inspirational figure.
- The film successfully presents morally ambiguous antagonists with understandable motivations, avoiding simple good vs. evil dichotomies.
Weaknesses
- The plot pacing can be slow at times, with some viewers finding certain sections to drag.
- The narrative can feel rushed in places, particularly in explaining the complex world-building and political subplots due to the adaptation constraints of the manga.
- Some characters, beyond Nausicaä, are criticized for being underdeveloped archetypes rather than fully fleshed-out individuals.
- The environmental and anti-war messages, while powerful, are sometimes perceived as heavy-handed or overly didactic.
- Certain aspects of the setting and its inherent dangers are not fully explored or depicted with enough visceral impact for some viewers.
