Synopsis

Just like any other high school student, first-year Uta Komaki wants to make the most of her youth. With her namesake talent in singing, she attempts to join her school's light music club but repeatedly fails due to her extreme shyness and lack of confidence. Intimidated by the dazzling presence of the club's members, Uta fears to even submit her application. One day, Uta receives an invitation from Airi Kojou, president of the a cappella club, to check out their club instead. Unlike the light music club, this group performs purely without instruments. Uta soon finds herself amazed by the way the members' voices resonate with one another—delicate yet cohesive, resembling a mille-feuille dessert's thousand layers. Moved, Uta takes a quiet step forward into creating a harmony where everyone shines together. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Audience Consensus

The anime is a short, sweet, and relatively uncontentious watch, primarily recommended for fans of a cappella music. While the unique musical element is appreciated, the story and animation are considered average and somewhat generic. It's viewed as a decent, relaxing show, but not particularly groundbreaking or attention-grabbing, resulting in a generally positive but not enthusiastic reception.

Strengths

  • A cappella music is a unique and refreshing element compared to typical anime.
  • The music is well-done and a highlight of the show.
  • Characters have chemistry, making viewers want to learn more about them.
  • Realistic portrayal of the worries of those who stop singing.

Weaknesses

  • Story is fairly typical with overused tropes.
  • Animation is standard and not particularly memorable.
  • Plot feels planned on the bare minimum.
  • Feels like a feature for a mixed-media project rather than a standalone anime.
