Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Ai Ooto is finally at the cusp of unraveling the mystery behind her best friend's suicide. After stepping into the strange dreamlike world of the Wonder Egg and sparing people from their adversities, she reaches her end goal of resurrecting her friend from death. Yet, now with her friend alive, Ai is confused and hurt after realizing that she does not remember her anymore. She is not the only one who has been alienated by the person she saved. In fact, the other girls caught up in the affairs also face the same repercussions for bringing someone back to life. As they try to grasp their new reality, the girls come to terms with the trauma from their "mission" and question whether they should dive back into the Wonder Egg to uncover the truth behind everything.

Audience Consensus

The audience is deeply divided and overwhelmingly disappointed with the special episode's conclusion. While the initial premise and production values (art/animation) are praised, the finale is widely criticized for its nonsensical plot, unresolved mysteries, rushed character arcs, and extensive recap, leaving many feeling cheated and invalidated. The general sentiment is that the special is a massive letdown, likely due to production issues rather than artistic intent.

Strengths

  • Stunning art and animation throughout, consistent with the original series.
  • Some viewers found the premise and the girls' stories engaging in the first 12 episodes.
  • The insert song and new music were noted as good, even when placed during recap segments.

Weaknesses

  • Massive pacing issues, with the majority of the runtime dedicated to recap, leaving little room for new content.
  • The ending is extremely unsatisfying, raising more questions than it answers and invalidating previous plot points.
  • Character development and arcs were rushed, inconsistent, or completely dropped, leaving many storylines unresolved.
  • The plot became overly convoluted and confusing, with unexplained motivations and nonsensical reveals.
  • The handling of sensitive themes like suicide and pedophilia was criticized as simplistic, insensitive, or poorly resolved.
