Synopsis — from MyAnimeList
A village in danger, a mysterious child, warring daimyo, and the greatest ronin never known all clash in a Japan of magic and mechs. Learn the story of the first African samurai.
Audience Consensus
Audience sentiment is significantly divided, primarily over the jarring inclusion of sci-fi/fantasy elements like mechs and magic in a historical setting. While the animation and soundtrack receive consistent praise, the rushed pacing and weak writing detract from the experience for many, leading to disappointment for those expecting historical accuracy or a coherent narrative.
Strengths
- Visually striking art direction and animation, particularly during fight scenes.
- The soundtrack, a blend of hip-hop and traditional Japanese music, is highly praised.
- Yasuke himself is a likable protagonist, with his past often seen as more compelling than the present story.
Weaknesses
- Inclusion of magic and mechs in a historical setting is widely criticized as nonsensical and detrimental to the premise.
- Pacing is consistently described as rushed, leading to underdeveloped plot points and characters.
- The writing and character development, especially for Saki and villains, are considered weak and inconsistent.
- The historical accuracy is largely disregarded, which disappoints many viewers expecting a story about the actual Yasuke.
