Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

With reports of monsters terrorizing the reactor at Mount Nibel, the Shinra Electric Power Company dispatches their elite fighting force SOLDIER to investigate. Accompanied by fellow SOLDIER First Class Zack Fair and a small contingent of company guards, the war hero Sephiroth is to assess the condition of the Mako reactor at the behest of the company. In Nibelheim, the village that the reactor powers, Sephiroth discovers the source of the monsters and the origins of Shinra's legendary Jenova Project. Running through the woods months later, Zack is no longer the hero he once dreamt of becoming. He flees from the General Affairs Department of the Shinra Electric Power Company, better known as the Turks, who desperately seek to bury the evidence living within the two.

Audience Consensus

Audience reception is split, primarily based on familiarity with the original game. Fans of Final Fantasy VII appreciate the visual expansion of backstory and action sequences, but many find the short runtime and repetitive story elements disappointing. Detractors feel it's a "nostalgia-bait" cash grab that doesn't add substantial new content.

Strengths

  • Stunning animation and character designs that faithfully recreate the Final Fantasy VII world.
  • The voice acting is generally well-received, with specific praise for Sephiroth's voice actor.
  • Provides a satisfying visual representation of key backstory events for fans of the game.
  • Features excellent action sequences, particularly the fight between Zack and Sephiroth.

Weaknesses

  • The story is largely a recap of events already known to fans of the game, offering little new insight.
  • The short runtime (under 30 minutes) leaves many feeling unsatisfied and wanting more depth.
  • Transitions between story segments can be abrupt and disorienting.
  • The music, while decent, is often criticized for not using original game tracks and lacking emotional impact.
