Synopsis
eX-Driver is set in the future, where all transportation is easily controlled by AI. Though, like all machines, they tend to break down, lose control, or get re-programmed. This is where three high schoolers with non-AI cars—a Subaru WRX, a Caterham Super 7, and a Lotus Europa—come in to save the day and make sure the public is safe at all times. (Source: ANN, edited)
Audience Consensus
eX-Driver is viewed as a flawed but fun anime, particularly for car enthusiasts. The premise is interesting, but the execution is hampered by a short run and repetitive plot. While the animation is dated, the attention to detail in the cars and action sequences is appreciated, leaving many viewers with a sense of unfulfilled potential.
Strengths
- Unique premise of drivers versus rogue AI cars.
- Appeals to car enthusiasts with detailed vehicle animation and accurate sounds.
- Enjoyable, easy-to-watch action with well-defined characters (though not deep).
Weaknesses
- Repetitive plot with similar runaway car scenarios.
- Underdeveloped characters and relationships due to the short series length.
- Dated animation style and inconsistent art quality.
- Shallow story that doesn't explore the potential of its premise.
