Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Despite being the proud owner of six catgirls alongside his sister Shigure, Kashou Minazuki moves away from home to open his patisserie La Soleil. While unpacking, he makes a startling discovery: two of his catgirls, Chocola and Vanilla, have stowed away in his luggage! Although the twins desperately want to stay by their master's side, Kashou has no idea if he can manage both his new shop and the two catgirls. But what if having more hands on deck is exactly what he needs? With the support of his caring sister and loyal catgirls, Kashou puts all his heart into making his dream a reality!

Audience Consensus

The Nekopara OVA is a divisive production, largely appealing to existing fans of the visual novel who appreciate the faithful character designs and lighthearted 'catgirl' antics. However, critics frequently point to significant pacing issues, a lack of narrative depth, and animation stutters, making it a polarizing experience for those unfamiliar with the source material or expecting a more developed story.

Strengths

  • Captures the essence and appeal of the catgirls well, providing fan service for existing fans.
  • Art and character designs are generally praised for their quality and faithfulness to the source material.
  • Provides a fun, lighthearted, and 'turn off your brain' experience.
  • Sound design and voice acting are professional and well-done.
  • Some viewers found the emotional moments effective, despite the overall simplicity of the plot.

Weaknesses

  • Pacing is a significant issue, with rushed scenes and illogical transitions due to cramming a large visual novel into a short OVA.
  • The plot lacks depth and direction, feeling disjointed and hard to follow for newcomers.
  • Character development is minimal, with many characters being described as one-dimensional or relying on tropes.
  • Cinematography and animation quality have notable flaws, including jittery pans and static scenes.
  • Significant deviations from the visual novel, particularly the removal of romantic and adult elements, disappointed long-time fans.
