Audience Consensus

The audience recognizes the film's ambition in portraying Japan's post-war recovery and the conflict between tradition and progress. However, the sloppy writing, clichéd dialogue, and lack of foreshadowing detract from the overall experience. While the underlying themes are appreciated, the execution is seen as a significant weakness.

Strengths

  • Complex symbolism reflecting Japan’s post-war economic development.
  • Effort made to capture the post-war feeling in the characters and their desires.

Weaknesses

  • Sloppy writing with plot twists lacking foreshadowing.
  • Pedestrian and clichéd script with unnecessary exposition.
  • Characters never say anything original or clever.
