Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

There is a new urban legend circulating Tokyo. It claims that if you make a request in the Ask-a-Thief Channel, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts will show up and bring justice by stealing a corrupt person's heart and making them regret all their wrongdoings. As strange and inexplicable events continue to happen all around town, more people submit their requests in hope that the mysterious vigilante group will help. Kazuya Makigami is a burglar by night, but has started to have second thoughts about his crimes and those who help him commit them. Unable to stand up to his comrades himself, Kazuya submits a request to the Ask-a-Thief Channel.

Audience Consensus

Audience sentiment is largely positive, particularly among fans of the Persona series, who praise the music and stylish animation as excellent hype-builders for the game. However, there's a notable division regarding the narrative quality, with many acknowledging its purpose as a promotional tool but criticizing the lack of depth in story and character for those seeking a standalone experience.

Strengths

  • Fantastic music with a unique jazzy, fashionable, and fitting style that enhances the mood, even in gloomy portions.
  • Visually stylish with a beautiful color palette and excellent character designs, often described as gloriously animated with a standout fight scene.
  • Effectively serves as a hype-builder and introduction to the Persona 5 game, giving a glimpse of its world, mechanics, and tone.
  • Accurate representation of the game's aesthetic and mechanics like the Baton Pass, making it a delight for fans of the source material.

Weaknesses

  • Plot and story are considered barebones, predictable, or throwaway, serving more as a teaser than a substantial narrative.
  • Character development is lacking due to the short runtime, with characters often feeling like one-note archetypes.
  • Animation quality is inconsistent, with some scenes being well-animated and others being poor or janky, lessening the impact of certain moments.
  • As a standalone product, it fails to provide a deep narrative and requires prior knowledge of the game for full understanding.
