Volcanion despises humans and tries to get away, but it’s forced to drag Satoshi along as it continues its rescue mission. They arrive in a city of cogs and gears, where a corrupt minister has stolen the ultimate invention: the Artificial Pokémon Magearna, created 500 years ago. He plans to use its mysterious power to take control of this mechanical kingdom! Can Satoshi and Volcanion work together to rescue Magearna? One of the greatest battles in Pokémon history is about to unfold!

Audience Consensus

The audience is divided on the narrative quality of Volcanion to Karakuri no Magearna, with strong praise for its animation, music, and character of Volcanion, but significant criticism for a generic and underdeveloped plot. While many found it enjoyable and visually impressive, a notable portion felt it failed to live up to its thematic potential and relied too heavily on established Pokémon movie tropes.

Strengths

  • Stunning animation and art, with incredibly fluid movement and no noticeable still shots.
  • Excellent sound design and music, with voice acting conveying Pokémon emotions and fitting insert/theme songs.
  • Memorable characters, each with distinct personalities and significant roles, including Pokémon.
  • Volcanion is a standout character who largely carries the film and makes it engaging.

Weaknesses

  • The plot is generic and repetitive, featuring a standard 'bad guy steals invention' trope.
  • The movie fails to explore its potentially interesting themes of the difference between machines and living creatures, or the concept of a soul-heart.
  • Underutilization of the forced mega-evolution plotline and its potential connection to Pokémon abandonment and distrust.
  • Some awkward animation moments, particularly with character clothing changes.
  • Ash's characterization is criticized for being self-righteous and preachy.
  • Repetitive settings and plot elements found in many previous Pokémon movies.
