Synopsis

The dawn of a decisive battle nears in Leyte Gulf against the Abyssal Fleet, the mysterious enemies that occupy the sea. As the only ones capable of fighting them, Kanmusu—young girls possessing the souls of warships—reorganize in preparation. The Shiratsuyu-class destroyer Shigure is assigned to the First Striking Force, Third Section—also known as 1YB3H. Unfortunately for Shigure, 1YB3H consists of the remaining few Kanmusu and serves as a diversionary fleet. Needing to confront the Abyssal Fleet head-on, it may well be their first and final mission together. Even so, Shigure refuses to let the enemy take another comrade from her. As they advance toward Leyte Gulf during this suicidal mission, the members of 1YB3H must support each other and persevere to prove their worth as competent ships. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Audience Consensus

Audience reception is heavily divided, with many feeling alienated by the darker tone and reliance on prior knowledge of the game. Some appreciate the more mature and historically grounded approach, while others find it boring and inaccessible. The show's production quality is generally praised, but the narrative choices are highly polarizing, leading to a significant discrepancy between enjoyment and expectations.

Strengths

  • Visually impressive animation, especially in early episodes.
  • Faithful adaptation of game mechanics and specific events.
  • Shigure's portrayal aligns well with the show's tone and historical context.
  • More serious and mature tone compared to the first season.

Weaknesses

  • Assumes extensive knowledge of the game, making it inaccessible to newcomers.
  • Pacing feels rushed and padded.
  • Story and characters may be boring or unlikeable to some viewers.
  • Significant departure from the tone and style of the original anime.
  • Ending lacks a satisfying conclusion.
  • Relies heavily on nostalgia and 'memberberries'.
