Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Life is not easy for Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan with a vast imagination and a short temper. In a twist of fate, she gets taken into the Cuthbert house in Avonlea. The elderly occupants Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert were looking for a young boy to help in the fields, but they're in for quite a shock when they realize Anne is a girl. Adapted from the acclaimed classic by L. M. Montgomery, Akage no Anne portrays Anne's upbringing from 11 to 17 years of age and her encounters and separations with various people. Only time will tell what major decision Anne has to make that will change her life forever.

Audience Consensus

The audience overwhelmingly praises "Akage no Anne" for its masterful character development, faithful adaptation, and stunning visual artistry, particularly its backgrounds. While minor criticisms exist regarding animation quality in later episodes and a shift in tone, the overall sentiment is one of deep appreciation for its heartwarming and emotionally resonant storytelling.

Strengths

  • Exceptional character development, particularly Anne's growth from an imaginative child to a mature young woman.
  • Beautiful, detailed hand-painted backgrounds that enhance the atmosphere and historical accuracy of the setting.
  • Faithful adaptation of the source material, capturing the nuances and emotional depth of the novel.
  • Masterful pacing that allows for immersion in the world and characters, even in seemingly uneventful episodes.
  • Heartwarming portrayal of relationships, especially the bonds between Anne, Marilla, and Matthew.

Weaknesses

  • Animation quality, particularly character movement, can be noticeably worse in the later third of the series.
  • The tone shifts in the final third, becoming slower and more somber, which may not appeal to all viewers.
  • Some viewers might find the pacing too slow or the focus on ordinary things to be less engaging compared to more action-oriented stories.
