Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

In the underground Diamond Domain, where many Carbink live, the Mythical Pokémon Diancie serves as ruler. The Holy Diamond that sustains the land is beginning to fall apart, and Diancie is not yet strong enough to create a new one. While seeking help from the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas, Diancie encounters a group of thieves who want to take control of its diamond-producing power–and who awaken the Legendary Pokémon Yveltal from its cocoon in the process! Can Satoshi and his friends help Diancie discover its true power, stop Yveltal’s rampage, and save the Diamond Domain?

Audience Consensus

The audience is divided on "Pokemon Movie 17: Hakai no Mayu to Diancie." While many praise Diancie's character, the vibrant visuals, and some creative moments, others find the plot cliched and underdeveloped. The film is seen as a decent, watchable entry, especially compared to recent installments, but ultimately falls short of being groundbreaking or particularly memorable for some.

Strengths

  • Diancie is a likeable and cute character with enjoyable interactions.
  • The movie features some fresh ideas and creative moments.
  • The visuals and art style are striking and well-executed, particularly the XY art amplified with budget.
  • The integration of multiple thief groups with evolved Kalos starter Pokémon was a nice touch.
  • The main characters' chemistry and the joy of life are highlighted.
  • Team Rocket received more screen time and contributed positively.

Weaknesses

  • The plot is cliche, overused, and ultimately weak.
  • Diancie's character arc is underdeveloped, leading to less engaging mid-movie content.
  • The film suffers from a sudden shift from character focus to plot, with neither being fully developed.
  • Legendary Pokémon (Yveltal & Xerneas) are not built up enough to feel world-shattering.
  • The villains lack strong motivation and development.
  • Some CGI and realistic rock textures clash with the art style.
  • The movie feels too similar to past installments, making it forgettable.
