Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Akio Honjou is a high school student with a special gift for music. He can perfectly recall any piece of music that he has heard only once. One day, as he tries to reproduce a particularly soothing piano melody, he unexpectedly meets Juri Makina—the girl whose cell phone had spontaneously played the tune earlier in class. If art is the only way to truly know what landscapes populate others' inner worlds, then can this particular tune pave the way for Akio to begin to understand the more intellectual and emotional aspects of his captivating classmate, Juri?

Audience Consensus

Audience sentiment leans strongly positive, with widespread appreciation for the thoughtful themes, beautiful animation, and evocative music. While the short format limits deeper character development, the core message of individuality and connection resonates deeply with most viewers. Minor disagreements exist regarding the intentional ambiguity of the ending and genre classification, but these do not significantly detract from the overall positive reception.

Strengths

  • The animation is consistently praised as fluid, realistic, and visually pleasing, particularly in dream sequences.
  • The soundtrack and music are highlighted as fitting, enhancing the atmosphere, and memorable.
  • The story's exploration of themes like individuality, conformity, dreams, and connection is seen as deep, thought-provoking, and effectively conveyed despite the short runtime.
  • The voice acting is generally considered good, effectively conveying character emotions.

Weaknesses

  • The short runtime limits character development, making it difficult for viewers to form lasting emotional attachments.
  • The plot can be perceived as underdeveloped or relying on minor teenage drama by some viewers.
  • Some find the 'magical' or 'supernatural' elements to be vaguely explained or confusing, or miscategorized in genre tags.
  • The ending is intentionally ambiguous, which some viewers appreciate while others desired more closure or resolution.
