Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and his sister Suguha meet up with Asuna Yuuki, Rika "Lisbeth" Shinozaki, and Keiko "Silica" Ayano at the SAO Survivor School. Kirito then attends emergency counseling, while the girls go for a swim at the pool. It turns out that said "emergency counseling" is a subterfuge set up by Seijirou Kikuoka, who aims to rehash the incident of Sword Art Online in hopes of determining Akihiko Kayaba's motives. What will the girls get up to in the pool, and what awaits Kirito and his "counseling"?

Audience Consensus

Audience reception to Sword Art Online: Extra Edition is highly divided, primarily due to its extensive recap content. While some fans appreciate the nostalgic refresher and the brief new material, a significant portion of viewers found the special to be a disappointing and prolonged waste of time, heavily diluted by repetitive flashbacks and excessive fanservice.

Strengths

  • Animation and art quality remain consistent with the original series.
  • Soundtrack, including reused and new songs, is generally well-received.
  • Provides a nostalgic refresher for long-time fans.
  • Offers some character interactions outside of the main game setting.
  • The new footage, though brief, is sometimes described as inspiring or a pleasant diversion.

Weaknesses

  • The overwhelming majority of the runtime is a recap of the first season, with very little new content.
  • The new plot elements are often considered weak, anticlimactic, or rushed.
  • Significant reliance on fanservice, particularly with the female characters in swimsuits.
  • The framing device for the recap (interviews/discussions) is seen as boring or redundant by many.
  • The narrative quality and plot depth are considered shallow and not thought-provoking by some.
  • Character development is minimal to non-existent in the new content.
