Synopsis

This story takes place during the Heian Period of Japan`s history, when evil spirits still resided in the forests, mountains and rivers. A girl, accompanied by her loved one, battles against these evil spirits, while she is disguised as man. This brave woman, aka "Kaidomaru", with a Chinese character "Flame" tatooed on her upper arm, was one of the "Four Devas". Kaidomaru fights for the honor of her lost love, Raikou Minamotono, who had sacrified his life in order to protect the capital Kyoto, from the evils deeds of a "princess" cursed by a malicious ogre. The princess, whom Kaidomaru used to play with as a child, has now become her ultimate enemy. (Source: Production I.G.)

Audience Consensus

Audience sentiment is largely negative, with criticism focused on the confusing and underdeveloped plot, shallow characters, and washed-out visuals. While some appreciate the unique animation style and detailed environments, these aspects are not enough to overcome the narrative issues. Many viewers found the anime boring and difficult to follow, leading to a generally unfavorable reception.

Strengths

  • Unique animation style resembling animated scroll paintings with watercolour and pastel glory.
  • Detailed environments like trees, leaves, and grass.
  • Well-choreographed action scenes with striking contrast from bright red blood.

Weaknesses

  • Fragmented and disconnected plot due to insufficient time to explore the political intrigues.
  • Characters are not given enough time to develop, resulting in a lack of emotional connection.
  • Washed-out colors and disjointed animation at times.
  • Lack of clear motivation for character actions, leading to a sense of randomness.
