Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

Two OVA episodes are bundled as DVDs with each of volumes 6 and 7 of the manga. The first OVA is a prequel story written by the manga's author. Before the beginning of the main story, Rea and Chihiro have already met at a certain place: an outdoor hot-spring bath. The second OVA takes place after the series (effectively episode 14). The Furuya family finds a mysterious young girl hiding under the household temple.

Audience Consensus

Audience reception for the Sankarea OVAs is moderately divided, largely due to the significant difference in quality and narrative contribution between the two episodes. While the first OVA is praised as a strong prequel that enhances the main series, the second is seen as confusing and underdeveloped, failing to leave a lasting impact.

Strengths

  • Well-animated and cute scenes, capturing the essence of the TV series.
  • First OVA serves as a well-done prequel, providing backstory and clarifying plot points for the main series.
  • Good voice acting, particularly from Kimura Ryouhei.

Weaknesses

  • Second OVA is confusing, weakly connected to the main story, and feels like an average or bland episode.
  • Pacing issues and lack of solid plot lines in the OVAs, making them drag.
  • Character development is uninteresting, and the connection between main characters in a romance anime is not felt.
  • Art style is not universally favored, with some disliking the dark and grungy aspects.
