Audience Consensus
Audience reception is divided, with many praising the improved art and continued character development, while others strongly criticize the rushed pacing and condensed story. Fans of the original anime and manga will find some enjoyment, but a significant portion feels the OVAs are a lesser product that doesn't live up to the main series.
Strengths
- Artwork is a step up from the original series.
- Characters remain consistent and beloved by fans.
- The fights become more intense and complex with the introduction of a new enemy group ('Yami').
- The sound design amplifies the atmosphere and enhances battle scenes.
- Expands the world developed in the anime, creating a more comprehensive experience for fans.
Weaknesses
- Pacing is too fast, with too much manga material squeezed into short OVAs.
- The OVAs can feel like a tease and leave viewers wanting more.
- The focus shifts too much to fighting and away from the moral dilemmas Kenichi faces.
- The OVAs spoil elements of the original anime/manga, making them less impactful if not familiar with the source material.
- Can be bothersome to viewers coming directly from the main series due to recaps and pacing.
