Synopsis — from MyAnimeList

As the War continues, Amuro and the White Base crew must make their way toward the Earth Federation Headquarters, Jaburo. On their way they meet several new enemies and face off against impossible odds. They fight in Operation Odessa to relieve the Earth from the clutches of the Zeon forces. Lives are lost, new friendships are made, and discoveries at every corner. Amuro soon learns that he possesses the powers of the mysterious Newtypes.

Audience Consensus

Audience reception is largely positive, with appreciation for the improved action, character development, and thematic depth concerning the realities of war. However, significant criticism exists regarding the narrative's compression, which leads to rushed character arcs and the dilution of core concepts. While considered a strong middle chapter, it is often seen as a necessary but flawed part of the larger trilogy.

Strengths

  • Improved character development for both protagonists and antagonists compared to the first film.
  • More engaging plot and action sequences, with better pacing than the previous installment.
  • Thoughtful exploration of the human cost of war and the complexities of both sides of the conflict.
  • Visually appealing animation and art direction, especially in mobile suit designs and battle scenes, despite its age.
  • Compelling themes of survival, responsibility, and the psychological toll of war.

Weaknesses

  • Compressed storytelling leads to rushed character arcs and underdeveloped emotional moments.
  • Thematic elements and concepts like 'Newtypes' are sometimes diluted or trivialized due to condensation.
  • Inconsistent tone, with some instances of unnecessary comic relief (children) detracting from the serious war setting.
  • Predictable plot points and 'death flags' that lessen narrative tension.
  • Dated animation quality may be a barrier for some modern viewers, even with improvements.
