Battle Angel Alita
Synopsis — from MyAnimeList
Doc Ido, a doctor and mechanic who lives and works in the hellish, postapocalyptic "Scrapyard," finds the—miraculously preserved—remains of a female cyborg in a junk heap. After he revives and rebuilds her, the preternaturally strong, amnesiac "Gally" begins to forge a life for herself in a world where every day can bring a fight for life. The 1993 Gunnm anime adapts the first two volumes of the Gunnm manga.
Audience Consensus
Audience reception to Gunnm is mixed, largely due to its nature as an incomplete adaptation of a beloved manga. While praised for its stunning visuals, compelling themes, and well-developed characters that create a strong cyberpunk atmosphere, many viewers lament the rushed pacing and insufficient story development inherent in its short OVA format. It's seen as a visually impressive but narratively unsatisfying introduction to a much larger story.
Strengths
- Artwork and animation are very good, especially for its time, with atmospheric visuals and smooth action sequences.
- Character designs are detailed and expressive, contributing to an intimately crafted feel.
- Thematic depth exploring concepts like dreams, desperation, freedom, obsession, love, and the divide between social classes.
- Compelling character development for the main protagonists, showing complex motivations and realistic behaviors.
- The cyberpunk setting is visually striking and effectively conveys the dystopian mood.
- The action scenes are well-executed, brutal, and bloody, adding to the overall narrative.
Weaknesses
- The story feels rushed and underdeveloped due to the limited two-episode format, leaving many plot points and character interactions feeling incomplete.
- The OVA is widely regarded as an incomplete adaptation of the manga, leaving viewers wanting more and questioning the plot's progression.
- Some voice acting, particularly in the English dub, is criticized as whiny or poor.
- While visually impressive, the animation can be described as rushed in places, and some character designs have odd proportions.
- The pacing is too quick, with little transitional downtime, making the narrative feel like a string of important events rather than a flowing story.
